With over 30 years of construction experience, I picked this up with the idea it would be as humorous as other so called contractor guides I've read. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised to find a very practical guide that any homeowner will do well to consult when contemplating home renovations. I congratulate Mr. Baum for providing practical guidance based upon common sense that the homeowner will not find overwhelming. It is rare to find a concise yet understandable plain language guide for this topic. Mr Baum provides great information in a consistent easy to read format.
Michael's "Sawdust to Satisfaction" is a frank discussion of the realities of working with general contractors. If you're planning on hiring a contractor, read his book first.
we are currently in escrow on a fixer upper. reading this book has given me more confidence in selecting a contractor and moving forward with a home that we could make our own. Prior to reading this book, I would have been overwhelmed and distrustful and probably would have walked away from a potentially great home. This book is very practical and informative.
At first I wasn't sure that I would get much from this book. I've done a few remodels in my time and thought I knew what I needed to know. As a quick read, there was lots for me to learn. Be sure to pay close attention and follow the tips found in Chapter 5 about how to properly vet the contractor you are considering and where to check up on licenses, insurance, etc...that chapter alone will save you lots of time and money!
As a professional directly involved in architectural and engineering design of residential projects I often witness problems arise when miscommunication occurs between the general contractor and the owner. But as Michael Baum has clearly demonstrated in this book, he understands construction from the homeowner's perspective. He approaches projects with the homeowner's best interests in mind. He clearly lays out, for the homeowner, all of the components that must considered for a successful project. So I have no choice but to recommend his book to anyone planning or considering a residential renovation.

I thought that I had everything figured out when I started my first home remodeling project. But, I had completely missed getting smart about general contractors themselves. In hind sight, that was a mistake. For example, I could have easily verified whether or not the contractors I interviewed had each of the insurance pieces in place that Michael recommends to protect the homeowner during the demo & remodeling process. The contractor I went with didn't have a significant coverage in place, and I got sued when a worker got hurt on the job.
I wish that I had this book at my side for my first remodel because it would have saved me from a ton of frustration and expense. Just get it - it's a no-brainier...
Having read Michael Baum’s ‘Sawdust to Satisfaction’ I almost wish I had some remodelling to do. He gives some great tips in this book, and definitely seems to know what he is talking about. One of the faults I often made is that I chose for the cheapest contractor. Baum warns against the many mistakes one can make in the process. An interesting one, though not unimportant pets always remain your own responsibility rather than of the contractor!
